Total Overhaul: How To Reinvent Your Image
It can happen to the best of us. You wake up one morning and nothing seems right. You are sick of your hair, your wardrobe, and your all-around appearance. In fact, you are just sick of everything being so... 'the same'.

You feel it’s time for a total change but aren’t sure where to begin or how to start reinventing yourself without taking drastic measures.

Personal reinvention should ultimately be something special we want to do for ourselves, perhaps because you want to pursue a new career or start a new business. It can be the “after the breakup” reinvention that many women (and men) feel is a positive and life-improving experience.

Whatever the reasons for our desire for change, there are many things we can begin doing right now to shake things up a bit.

Evaluate your skincare ritual

Whether you are male or female, your skin is one of the frst things people notice when they see you, so take the extra effort to make it glow. Look at what you are currently doing for your skin. Does your skin appear healthy or is it dull, oily, or acne prone?

Visit a beauty booth in the mall, or better still a skin clinic, for advice on products that ft your skincare needs. You can also try making some of your own safe and healthy skin masks.

Set aside time every day to pamper your skin and begin using SPF products to protect it from the UAE sun’s harmful rays.

DIY face mask recipes

For Oily Skin: Matcha mask


  • 1/4 cup cooked, plain oatmeal
  • 1/4 tspn matcha powder (a longstanding tradition of Japanese culture, matcha green tea is the highest quality powdered green tea available. Most organic stores will sell the powder)
  • 1/2 tspn of honey
Stir the ingredients together and then squeeze in fresh lemon juice, mixing until you get the right consistency for a mask. Apply the mixture to clean skin for 10 minutes. Once the time is up, wet your hands and begin massaging skin to create a light exfoliation before rinsing.

Remember: If you have active acne, be extra gentle when exfoliating.

Why It Works: "Matcha is a superfood and has powerful antioxidants," says Lamees Hamdan, M.D., founder and CEO of Dubai based brand Shiffa, which has been creating organic products based on the principles of dermatology since 2004. She likes applying this mask in the morning for an antioxidant boost during the day. This mask may also help reduce your skin’s sebum production.

For dry skin: Honey avocado Mask


  • 2 tbsp of honey
  • 2 tbsp of avocado
  • 2 tbsp of olive oil
  • 1 mashed mango
Directions: Mix all the ingredients together. Leave on for 15 minutes and then remove with a warm cloth

Why It Works: "Honey is great because it is hydrating without risking a breakout," says Joanna Vargas, celebrity facialist and founder of Joanna Vargas Salon and Skincare Collection in the US. "Avocado is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins, which are incredible for your lymphatic system and restoring the skin's lipid layer." The mashed mango helps brighten the skin, since it’s packed with vitamin C, while the olive oil softens. Olive oil is also an anti-inflammatory that reverses the signs of sun damage.

For combination skin: Triple-action turmeric mask


  • 1 tbsp of organic Greek yogurt
  • 1 tspn of honey
  • 1/2 tspn turmeric
  • 1 tspn aloe
Directions: Combine all the ingredients together and apply for 10 minutes
Why It Works: "I call this a triple-action mask because it is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and super hydrating," explains Vargas. "Honey and aloe are natural antiseptics, great for keeping your skin clear. Turmeric is the anti-inflammatory, and organic Greek yogurt will boost your skin’s hydration."

Get rid of old makeup

For ladies, with any new look and style should come new makeup. Take a timeout from your busy schedule to go through your makeup drawer and throw out anything that is expired. Re-evaluate the makeup you wear every day and decide if it is time for an update.

Shop for new makeup at a store that allows you to test shades and colours on your skin and choose the makeup that not only looks great on you but can be used for your brand new style.

Change your eye colour (yes really!)

Sometimes all you need is a little change to inspire a much larger change in how you perceive yourself and, in reaction, how you project yourself. Changing your eye colour by going to the optometrist is easy to do and not that expensive. There are now eye colour changing drops and tinted contact lenses – both can have a dramatic effect.

You can give yourself those bright green eyes you’ve always wanted, or you can finally become a blue-eyed babe. Deep and moody brown eyes? You can do that, too. You don’t even have to stick with one colour and can buy different coloured sets to suit all your moods.

Alter your hair parting

To get an instant revamp, you might not have to do anything more extreme to your looks than changing your hair part. Women in particular tend to become comfortable doing the same hair routine morning after morning.

Break free of the routine and style your hair with the part on the opposite side of where it usually is. This is one of those little changes you can make that is noticeable, yet your co-workers will have a hard time guessing why you look so different.

Get some new accessories

Details are everything they say, and personal accessories can make a big statement about who you are and what you want from life. Trawl through your current accessories and get rid of anything that feels outdated – don’t just bin them, you can donate to charity.

You can change your look by buying and wearing different types of shoes, putting on a different pair of shades, carrying a different style of purse, and changing up your jewellery.
