A trek to remember

This year's Women's Heritage Walk had to take on the forces of nature

Last month saw the awe- inspiring Women's Heritage Walk (WHW) return for the third year, with more than 180 women applying to take part and 50 being selected – both expats and Emiratis.

The ladies set off on 9 February and were expected to fnish on 14 February. Everything was going as planned until they were met by a violent sandstorm, causing the fveday walk to be cut down to three as the ladies were evacuated.

Despite three months of training, nothing could have prepared them to face nature at its most gruelling.

Dubai resident Jody Ballard, founder of WHW, expressed the collective disappointment of the women missing out on this amazing opportunity, however, the safety of the group took priority.

This initiative started eight years ago and it was the rich Emirati heritage that sparked Ballard’s curiosity, leading to her found WHW in an effort to retrace the steps of the Bedouin women who used to walk across the desert from Al Ain to Abu Dhabi.

Check out OL’s video where we met the women involved in the walk at Al Ain Oasis before they set off for their journey; search for myoasislivingmagazine on Facebook for our page.
