• Oasis Living gets the wellness and beauty lowdown with one of the longest practicing cosmetologists in the country, Iwona Pruska

Science meets beauty in cosmetology, a branch which has many misconceptions surrounding it. People often mistake it as a fancy term for cience meets beauty in cosmetology, a branch which has many misconceptions surrounding it. any therapy when in fact it’s a medley of theory and practice culminating in wellbeing treatments.

To peel the layers, Oasis Living met with one of the UAE’s most established cosmetologists, Iwona Pruska, for some insight into the feld and her practice.

    TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

I'm a Polish cosmetologist based in Dubai. Cosmetology is my life's passion as it's always providing me with new experiences and challenges.

WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN IT?

During my teenage years, I did not have any skin problems but my close friend was not so lucky and visited beauty salons regularly. She was a very shy person and always asked me to keep her company. Out of curiosity, even though my complexion was unblemished, I underwent the treatments along with her and was always asking questions about their properties and benefts. This is how I got acquainted with the fundamentals of cosmetology. The feld fascinated me so much that after graduating from high school, I decided to pursue it professionally.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST VISIT THE UAE?

It was back in 1979. I immediately fell in love with the country. I was fascinated with the opulence of the architecture and the traditional Arabic style. I didn't offcially move here until 1985 though.

I returned to Poland after my frst visit to fnish my studies and then opened a spa in the city of Opole in southern Poland in 1982. During this time, I travelled a lot between Dubai and Opole before deciding to follow my heart and settle in the emirate.

The cultural diversity was part of what attracted me here as the UAE is a very metropolitan place. In the 35 years of my practice, Dubai has introduced me to people of many different backgrounds with different skin types and conditions from all over the world. This is a great advantage as it offers richer professional experiences as well.

    HOW HAS YOUR CAREER UNFOLDED?

I worked in a joint family spa business for many years. Then, in 2007, I set off on my own and launched Iwona Specialty Clinic in Jumeirah. I also spent my frst years conducting research – modifying the latest innovations in skincare and body wellness and even designed a series of facials and body treatments which were met with a lot of positivity from a number of VIPs including celebrities and members of the royal family as well.

At my clinic, the treatments are tailored to the specifc needs of each client because I also consider various skin changes that occur along with the aging process and the impact of their life and stress on their skin. Each patient’s skin and condition is different and deserves an individualised approach. This is why no two of my patients receive the same treatment. Everything I do is customised based on their particular problem, and this I believe is also the reason that my patients take the same pride in me that I take in them.

WHAT OTHER SERVICES DOES YOUR CLINIC OFFER?

For one, we're the only clinic in the UAE that offers a whole-body cryotherapy treatment to the public. It is a non-invasive and nonsurgical cosmetic and rehabilitative therapy which takes place in a chamber that operates at a temperature of minus 110 Celsius. We also have treatments to boost collagen and skin texture that are customised for every patient. We offer a large variety of skin, detox, slimming and physiotherapy treatments – all of which are listed on our website (iwonaspecialtyclinic.com)

WHY IS COSMETOLOGY A GOOD THING?

It holds a very important role in society as it is all about well-being for not just females, but males as well. In today’s world, almost everyone invests in cosmetology. We all wish to enhance our self-confdence by making improvements to our appearance.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COMMON SERVICES PEOPLE COME IN FOR?

Non-invasive face-lifts are the most common treatments patients come in for. An example of the treatments would be ultrasound, radio-frequency and laser therapy. Mesotherapy is also a very popular treatment we provide for hair and skin rejuvenation.

WHAT IS ONE TREATMENT THAT EVERYONE SHOULD INDULGE IN AT SOME POINT?

    Defnitely hydrating and brightening treatments.

    WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

In 2016, I expanded the clinic with an additional eleven treatment rooms. Currently, the clinic covers over 14,000 sq ft, with a wellness centre, including physiotherapy and sport rehabilitation treatments. The clinic is state-of-theart as we offer our patients the latest discoveries and technologies, and this is something that I will continue. To research, to grow and to maintain what I offer. We are a very lucky generation as science continues to advance and surprise us and the techniques we currently employ are only the beginning.
