Anna Al Qasimi-Roberts is Managing Director of Nudge, a coaching frm that aims to push clients in the right direction in life. She spoke to Oasis Living about fnding your voice
WHY DID YOU LAUNCH NUDGE?
After a decade working
internationally in television and
radio, I wanted to harness my
skill-set and expertise to help
those who wouldn't normally be
able to get public speaking or
media training. Usually there is
a high cost factor involved and
these courses are reserved for
middle to senior management
in big companies, but I wanted
to help entrepreneurs and small
businesses get their message
across to a wider audience. I am
an introvert myself in what is often
an extroverts’ environment, so
unlike a lot of different approaches
to training I focus on crafting
messages that impact your
audience, growing your authentic
voice and empowering people to
use their voice for powerful change
in themselves and those around
them. Communication is a learned
skill and I believe everyone should
have the tools to tell their story.
HOW DOES IT ALL WORK?
Nudge is a communications
advisory and coaching practice
set up by myself in 2015. I was
28 years-old at the time and
wanted to change the way people
communicate. Everything is text
based these days, but we can
make an incredible impact on
our lives and attract a greater
audience by learning how to
use our voices. I started doing
consultancy, branding, speech
writing and on-camera training and then in 2017 I launched
an online portal to access my
programmes. They are all selfdirected video based courses you
complete independently in your own
time and in your own space. You
don't need to be the loudest person
in the room to be heard, you just
need the right tools to tell your story.
I also work with large corporates
for group training and advisory
services and will be branching out
internationally later this year.
WHAT'S THE PREMISE OF THE
The Fear Detox was born from
two ideas – one that you should be
'fearless' on stage, which I think
is just ridiculous. Fear is your
friend, instead of wasting energy
on eliminating fear entirely from
your speech or presentation, why
not acknowledge it’s there and
realise you have control over your
words and actions?
Secondly, I have a lot of people
saying they want to improve
their confdence – which is really
an intangible goal. Instead, I look at
communication and confdence as
being closely linked. Your level of
self-confdence is determined by the
language you use to describe your
abilities, strengths and of course
weaknesses. If you want to increase
your self esteem, it begins with how
you communicate both with yourself
and those around you. Everything
that you say starts in your mind.
You need to think frst about what
you want to say, and then actually
speak it. Being conscious of your
tongue will teach you how to control
your thoughts. To sign up, use the
form on imannaroberts.com and you
will be sent an email with the free
60-page ‘Fear Detox’ guide which
includes all your readings, journal
pages and recommended resources.
You can start it anytime you like and
follow at your pace.
WHY DID YOU FEEL IT WAS A GOOD
TIME TO LAUNCH THIS COURSE?
It is the start of 2018, a new year,
so there is a rush to do all of
these challenges and personal
development projects. A lot of
them cost money – money that people don't have after the festive
season – so that’s why this course
is free. I believe that any change
we want to make starts with how
we see ourselves. Everything
starts in the mind; our thoughts,
language and actions all determine
WHAT IS IT THAT HOLDS PEOPLE
BACK AND STOPS THEM FROM
We now have more options than
ever before for communicating
with the world – social media,
travel, smart phones and so on –
but we're overwhelmed by how to
actually articulate what we want.
Fear is just a thought, and if you
can see that it is just a thought that
is holding you back you can change
the language you use internally
and have that reflected in your
action. Also, I believe the word
inspiration has been exhausted. We
look everywhere else apart from
ourselves to be inspired instead
of looking at our own individual
achievements to be inspired and
continue setting goals.
TIPS AND IDEAS FOR LEADING A
LESS ANXIOUS LIFE?
Limiting beliefs are thoughts that
constrain us in some way. When we
do speak up we often use language
that limits our ability to see
ourselves achieving our goals in
business and life. Enabling beliefs
are thoughts that lead to growth,
success and happiness.
It’s not to say that you won’t fail
by being pushed outside of your
comfort zone, but enabling beleifs
will get you through the ups and
downs of learning and push you to
make progress in your business
Taking positive action can be
achieved if we commit to making
change in our business and life.
Developing a different mindset
is essential to making a change
that is benefcial and long-lasting,
it ultimately lets you have the
business and life you deserve.
Confdence is a verb, and the
only way to make a signifcant
change in your business or life
is to remember that our internal
language influences our actions
and determines what we achieve.
If you only have to think about
a goal once to achieve it, then it wasn’t much of a goal to begin
with. Effective goals push you
and force you to grow, learn and
develop to become the person
that you want to be.
Life can suddenly become a lot
clearer when you recognise and
understand your personal values.
Knowing the difference between
sustained feelings and temporary
emotions means that nothing
you experience in life, no matter
how terrible, will ever be anything
more than a bunch of thoughts,
plus a few physical sensations.
People only know what you tell
them, no-one is a mind reader, so
remember to speak up.
You always have a choice. Make
choices based on your values to
reach your goals.

THE WORLD, WHO HAS HAS
INSPIRED YOU - PAST OR
Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey,
for continuing to be her authentic
self. Facebook tech executive
Sheryl Sandberg, for showing
her resiliency and focus by
being a working mother. And

Prime Minister and announcing
her pregnancy after just three
months in offce.
